Anmeldung & Housing
Register within 14 days of moving inAnyone who moves into a flat in Germany must register their address (Anmeldung) at the local Bürgeramt. The registration certificate you get is the key that unlocks almost everything else: bank account, tax ID, residence permit.
- 1
Find a place and sign the contract
Compare Kaltmiete (rent without utilities) and Warmmiete (with heating and service charges). For short stays, WG rooms (shared flats) and student dorms from the Studierendenwerk are the fastest options.
- 2
Get the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
Your landlord (or main tenant, if you sublet) must give you this move-in confirmation. Without it the Bürgeramt cannot register you.
- 3
Book a Bürgeramt appointment
Book online as early as possible — in big cities slots can be weeks out. Check for cancellations in the morning; some cities also offer walk-in hours.
- 4
Attend the appointment
Bring the documents below. Registration is free, and you usually receive the Meldebescheinigung on the spot.
- 5
Put your name on the mailbox
Your tax ID, health card and official letters arrive by post. If your name is not on the letterbox, they may be returned to sender.
