Germany Guide

Everyday Life

The unwritten rules: shops close on Sundays, bottles have a deposit, rubbish is sorted, and quiet hours are taken seriously. Knowing them saves a lot of awkward moments.

  1. 1

    Get a transport ticket

The Deutschlandticket (€63/month) covers all local and regional public transport nationwide. Students often get it through the semester fee.

  2. 2

    Get a German SIM card

Prepaid SIMs need ID verification (video or in-store). Contract plans usually require a German bank account.

  3. 3

    Learn the rubbish system

Typical bins: paper (blue), packaging (yellow), organic (brown), glass by colour, and residual waste (black/grey).

  4. 4

    Return bottles for Pfand

Bottles with a deposit logo are worth €0.08–0.25 each. Return them at any supermarket machine and get a voucher.
