Germany Guide

Health Insurance

Covered from the day you arrive

Health insurance is mandatory for everyone living in Germany. You need proof of coverage to enroll at university, to start most jobs, and to get a residence permit.

  1. 1

    Decide between public and private

Public insurance (GKV — e.g. TK, AOK, Barmer) covers most students and employees. Private (PKV) is mainly for the self-employed, high earners, or students who are exempt from public insurance.

  2. 2

    Sign up with a provider

Most public insurers let you apply online in English. Students under 30 get a reduced student rate.

  3. 3

Send proof to your university or employer

Public insurers send your insurance status to the university electronically; employers register you themselves once you give them your insurer's name.

  4. 4

    Receive your health card

The electronic health card (eGK) arrives by post after you send a photo. Take it to every doctor's visit.

  5. 5

    Find a Hausarzt

A general practitioner is your first stop for most issues and can refer you to specialists.
