Residence & Visa
Apply before your visa expiresMost national (D) visas are only valid for a few months. Before yours expires you need a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) from your local Ausländerbehörde — called LEA or Landesamt für Einwanderung in some cities.
- 1
Check your visa's expiry date
Mark it in your calendar and plan to apply at least 6–8 weeks before. Waiting times for appointments can be long.
- 2
Register your address first
The Ausländerbehörde responsible for you is determined by your registered address, and they will ask for your Meldebescheinigung.
- 3
Submit your application
Many cities now use an online form or email application instead of an in-person first appointment. Upload complete documents to avoid delays.
- 4
Get a Fiktionsbescheinigung if needed
If you applied before your visa expired but have no decision yet, you can get this certificate, which lets you stay (and usually work) legally while you wait.
- 5
Biometrics and card pick-up
You'll give fingerprints and a photo, pay the fee, and collect the electronic residence card (eAT) a few weeks later.
