Enroll by the date on your admission letter

Admission is not the same as enrollment. You become a student (and can get your residence permit) only after you enroll (Immatrikulation) and pay the semester contribution.

  1. 1

    Accept your admission

Follow the instructions in your admission letter — many universities require online pre-enrollment before an in-person step.

  2. 2

    Pay the semester contribution

Usually €150–400. It funds student services and, at most universities, includes the Deutschlandsemesterticket for public transport.

  3. 3

    Complete enrollment

Submit your documents and health insurance status. You'll then get your student ID and enrollment certificate (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung).

  4. 4

    Visit the International Office

They help with residence permits, housing, buddy programmes and orientation weeks — go in your first week.

  5. 5

    Re-register every semester

Rückmeldung means paying the next semester's contribution on time. Missing the deadline can lead to automatic de-enrollment.
